Becoming Thin… And Staying That Way

My Life Before, During & After Weight Loss Surgery

Why such a drastic measure?

“Morbid Obesity” is generally defined as being 100 lbs. over ideal body weight.

A calculation derived from height and weight is called the Body Mass Index - BMI. Morbid obesity is more precisely defined as a BMI of over 40, which is roughly equivalent to being > 100 lbs. overweight.

In the extremely obese, the results of conservative weight control treatments, such as special diets, appetite suppressants, psychotherapy or exercise are usually disappointing and not long-lasting. Rebound weight gain is common and the long-term success rate is only 10-15%.

In most instances, surgery is the only option for a long-lasting weight control, thus the only hope to avoid the morbidity and mortality associated with extreme obesity.
